In 1917, St Thomas was purchased (along with St John and Saint Croix) by the United States for $25 million, as part of a defensive strategy to maintain control over the Caribbean and the Panama Canal during the First World War.
We spent the morning on shore with Edward. Edward treated us by taking us on the skyride (cable car) to Paradise Point. A 700ft hilltop with the most spectacular lookout point on the island. We spent an hour or so relaxing with a drink on the observation deck chatting and taking in the panoramic of the harbour, cruise ship and downtown Charlotte Amalie.
In the afternoon Trish and I set off to find a couple of Geocaches and explore the shops of Charlotte Amalie.
