Heysen Trail – Coastal Hike – Trig Campground to Tunk Head 22.5k. Another Heysen Trail hike as part of my Cancer Council Relay for Life Challenge.
What a spectacular hike through bushland, by waterfalls, along the coastal clifftops and beaches and finishing over steep grassy hills. One of the best hikes I have done.
This time I head East following narrow tracks through the dense native scrub of Deep Creek Conservation Park with the first stop at Deep Creek waterfall and an early lunch.

Midway along Tunkalilla Beach was the planned pickup point. With almost no phone coverage I had pre arranged with Trish four pick up and meeting points. Two in case something went wrong and one final pick up on Tunk Head Rd in case I had to keep going.
Coming across whale bones at the back of the beach was a surprise as was the horrendous steep slippery climb up the hillside off the beach. Hiking poles were a lifesaver to stop me falling and rolling and bouncing back to the bottom.
I have started casting my eye around as I walk through the conservation areas looking for native orchids. I am not a ‘plant’ person most of it is just green stuff to me. However I enjoy seeing these tiny orchids and trying to spot the rarer ones.
After some more up and down over steep hilly farmland and just as it was getting darker there was Trish waiting in the car with a hot cup off coffee. 23km of bushland and coastline all to myself, what a great day.
