Camino Vezelay Day 12 – La Chatre to Neuvy-Saint-Sepulchre

Voie Vezelay Day 12 – La Chatre to La Chatre to Neuvy-Saint-Sepulchre 21.16 km

Most if today would be described as a grassy walk, a lot of grass covered roads, tracks and trails even a grass covered bridge. Trout streams, Abbeys, Basilica and castles. An ordinary day walking across France!

Lunch and Exploration at Sarzay Castle

Highlight of today. I took time out to spend an hour exploring Sarzay Castle. Amazing construction. The imposing Château de Sarzay offers a perfect moment of rest and reflection. I liked that all the medieval implements were just there, you could pick them up. Not in glass cases like museums. Boy are those iron weapons and tools heavy. Climbing the tower steps, a panoramic view of the Berry countryside stretches into the horizon.

As this route is a pilgrimage that has been walked for 900 years it is no surprise that many of the landmarks are significant churches, abbeys, Basilica, Cathedrals Chateau and castles. Many built with pilgrim money (pilgrims were not all poor).

The wayside crosses are my favorite especially when I am making my own route and come across them at an intersections. I am having my birthday dinner with the 3 Belgians who are with me again this evening.

They are like the French they cook up a feast of fresh food nice but takes a while. Mine, all done in 2 lots of 2 minutes in the microwave! I have bought a fabulous French cake/pastry from artesian boulangerie to share for desert. They are giving me beer and wine fair exchange. They lay the table just like home, I eat out of the plastic bowl. Thay sang happy birthday to me in English.
