Le Vivier-sur-Mer to Mont Saint Michel

The journey from Le Vivier-sur-Mer to Mont Saint Michel is more than just a walk; it’s a pilgrimage through the picturesque landscapes of Normandy, France. This route takes you from the charming coastal village of Le Vivier-sur-Mer to the iconic Mont Saint Michel, a medieval marvel rising majestically from the bay. Lace up your walking boots, and let’s embark on a spiritual and scenic adventure.

After leaving town most of the walk was along a very long straight levy bank. Nice scenery. The ocean is now miles away from the foreshore though.
I found the huge amphibian trucks? better described as a fishing trawler with wheels interesting. Mussel farming enthusiasts will be able to taste the best mussels in the region.

Starting Point: Le Vivier-sur-Mer

Le Vivier-sur-Mer, known for its thriving Mussel beds and authentic seaside charm, provides a tranquil beginning to today’s walk. The quaint streets and the rhythm of the tides create an atmosphere of serenity. Take a moment to explore the village before setting off.

Vivier-sur-Mer to Mont St Michel path holes

The path looks deceptively easy with nice grass. Not so, hidden rabbit holes everywhere and very uneven underfoot. Went with sandals and socks as the footwear today. Not the best choice as I rolled on my ankles more times than I can count, and my left leg went chasing Alice in one vertical rabbit hole. Thank goodness for flexible ankles and hiking poles! Took me ages to pull all the seeds out of my socks.

The Coastal Path:

As you leave Le Vivier-sur-Mer behind, the coastal path unfolds, guiding you through windswept landscapes and alongside tidal flats. This stretch of the journey allows you to appreciate nature while immersing yourself in the historical significance of the region.

Pilgrim’s Progress:

Historically, pilgrims have traversed this path, making their way towards the iconic Mont Saint Michel. The sense of pilgrimage is palpable as you follow in the footsteps of those who sought solace and spiritual enlightenment on this sacred route. Along the way, you’ll encounter small chapels and markers that hint at the pilgrimage’s historical significance.

The Changing Tides:

One of the unique aspects of this journey is the encounter with the tidal dynamics of the region. The vast tidal flats surrounding Mont Saint Michel are exposed during low tide, creating a surreal landscape. Take advantage of the opportunity to witness this natural spectacle, but be mindful of the tides and plan your walk accordingly to avoid any challenges.

Approaching Mont Saint Michel:

As you draw closer to Mont Saint Michel, its silhouette on the horizon becomes increasingly awe-inspiring. The medieval abbey, perched atop a rocky island, seems to emerge magically from the surrounding bay. The final stretch of the pilgrimage takes you across the causeway, providing a sense of anticipation and accomplishment as you approach the UNESCO World Heritage site.

So most of the day was a party of one with only 6 or 7 other people the whole way until I got to causeway then it was a party of one in 10,000.
Walked much further than counted as I did another 5km up and down the ramparts, stairs and around the Mont after I got here. Certainly been a good training day today!
Completed the evening at 10-11pm with a light and sound show in and around the halls, chapels and Abby itself. Still light outside here until 11pm.
